What if the grandparents freed themselves? What if they left behind the indignity of confinement, the insult of neglect, the crime of long-term care and the chronic ache of pride, knees, and hips? What if they told us all to go to hell, stopped trying to master Zoom birthday parties and uncivil politics? What if they left us for joys of their own devising, flew the coop and followed their hearts, and tasted a freedom beyond our understanding? What if they stopped caring about us?
